I was mainly worried about the pleats adding bulk around the stomach, but they sit surprisingly flat. They look clean standing up and still behave properly when I'm sitting rather than ballooning out.
I've worn them with a fine knit and trainers and they didn't feel formal at all. They still look polished, but you definitely don't need a shirt and loafers to make them work.
